The Institute was established in 1968 under the name of Jordan Institute of Public Administration (JIPA) as an administratively and financially autonomous organization, to shoulder the responsibility of human resources development in the public sector. Its mission was carried out through delivering training and conducting administrative and financial consultation and studies that corresponded to the Public Sector's requirements and developments.
The past thirty-seven years the Institute has achieved a number of important milestones including the development of the training path that tallies the Career path in the Public Sector, with the aim of institutionalizing the process of capacity building for civil servants. Another milestone has been the encouragement of the Private Sector and civil society organizations, nationally and regionally, to enroll the
Institute's activities. This opened channels of communication facilitating effective exchange of knowledge and expertise among the different sectors, to achieve a well coordinated participation of all sectors in development of the country.
In 2001 The Institute's name was changed to the "National Institute for Training / NIT" With the new name emerged its new vision of “distinguished performance through effective training” according to a new by-Law No. 97-year 2001 was issued by the goverment, and the concepts it embedded became the basis for the Institutes activities i.e. training that adopts modern training methods and techniques that transfer work place to training and bring about interaction and participation.
With the aim of improving performance in line with the National Strategy for Public Administrative reform that has been initiated by the government.
